The property has always been used for sheep and wool production and at times cattle have also been run depending on climatic conditions and markets. There have been small areas of cropping but due to the topography and soil structure, it is difficult to crop large areas. The first vines were planted at Westgate in 1969 from some of the oldest rootstock in Australia and included Shiraz, Riesling and Trebbiano. The current varieties are still Shiraz and Riesling with small areas of Chardonnay, Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier.
