The story first began when Martin and Sally purchased “The Block” in 1982. Back then Martin was managing vineyards for Penfolds and decided he needed some relief from the day to day management demands.
To take his mind off vineyard work, he used the land for sheep grazing and cropping as well as entertaining the family with bonfires and BBQ’s.
In 1994 the vineyard urge was too strong and the inevitable began....After purchasing old cuttings from a Grange graded vineyard the estate began.
The dream was to create an estate grown, single vineyard wine. “The Block” was renamed “Heysen Estate” due to the Heysen Trail which runs along the eastern boundary, and an initial 4 hectares of Shiraz were planted.
Now Martin's son Josh has taken over the running of the vineyard which includes varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot, Grenache, Mourvedre, Riesling and Semillon.
